Wi-Fi 6E is an extension of the Wi-Fi 6 (802.11ax) wireless standard into the 6-GHz radio-frequency band. Wi-Fi 6E builds on Wi-Fi 6, which is the latest generation of the Wi-Fi standard, but only Wi-Fi 6E devices and applications can operate in the 6-GHz band.
Wi-Fi 6 vs. Wi-Fi 6E: How do they differ?

The key difference between the Wi-Fi 6 standard and the new Wi-Fi 6E extension is that Wi-Fi 6E essentially creates a “fast lane” for compatible devices and applications. The result: faster wireless speeds and lower latency.

Another difference is that Wi-Fi 6 is backward-compatible with earlier Wi-Fi standards but Wi-Fi 6E is not.

Yet Wi-Fi 6E’s support of only Wi-Fi 6E devices, which are becoming more widely available as of this writing, is a key way that the new extension creates a fast lane. The relatively low levels of congestion and interference in the 6-GHz band help to optimize performance.

When did the 6-GHz band become available?

The U.S. Federal Communications Commission (FCC) approved the opening of the 6-GHz band for unlicensed use in the United States in April 2020.

With this move, the FCC freed 1200 MHz of bandwidth for use by Wi-Fi 6E devices, which feature an extra radio that lets them communicate in the 6-GHz band. The 6-GHz band offers more than twice as much Wi-Fi bandwidth as the 5-GHz band.

The FCC extended Wi-Fi into the 6-GHz frequency band to help encourage wireless innovation and support smart homes and offices and the expanding Internet of Things (IoT).

Other countries and regulatory bodies, including Brazil, Chile, the European Union, Japan, Mexico, South Korea, Taiwan, the United Arab Emirates, and the United Kingdom, are also delivering 6-GHz unlicensed spectrum to their residents. 

Does Wi-Fi 6E require new infrastructure?

Yes. The choice to support Wi-Fi 6E requires IT, teams, to assess their current wireless infrastructure and to upgrade routers, switches, access points, and other critical elements as necessary so they can take full advantage of Wi-Fi 6E and its higher speeds.

Yet when organizations upgrade infrastructure to support Wi-Fi 6E, they don’t need to abandon the use of existing Wi-Fi 6 devices and applications that use the 2.4-GHz and 5-GHz bands.

Using the 6-GHz spectrum and adopting devices and applications designed for Wi-Fi 6E can help to reduce congestion on those other frequencies and provide a better experience to users accessing them.

Also, the Wi-Fi Alliance is requiring Wi-Fi Enhanced Open certification support for the 6-GHz spectrum. The Enhanced Open specification is based on the Opportunistic Wireless Encryption (OWE) specification. OWE is defined in the Internet Engineering Task Force (IETF) RFC 8110 specification and the Wi‑Fi Alliance Opportunistic Wireless Encryption Specification. OWE is optional in Wi-Fi 6E.

OWE protects the communication between each pair of endpoints from other endpoints.
